All's well than ends well.

Things look tranquil now, but a couple of hours earlier was a different story.  I was in the house, when Riley (daughter of neighbor who is replacing some fencing) came running up to tell me that something had happened to one of my baby goats.  Ran out to see what was going on and Randy said he heard a baby goat crying out like it was being killed.  He said all the goats took off running to the other end of the pasture, so figured a fox had probably gotten it.

I ran to where he said the screaming had come from and didn't find anything -- ran to the other end of the pasture to check to see who was missing and then back to the little barn where the rest were.  Everyone was accounted for, but one was breathing hard and its back was wet.

Best we could figure was that it was sleeping when (probably) a fox grabbed it on its back, but then when the goat got up, the fox had to let go because the goat was a little bit larger than it appeared.  Either that, or the mother goat tried to protect it.

Where was Captain, the guard llama, you may ask?  Standing the the shade with his front feet in the wading pool trying to keep cool.  He can jump from a standing position over a 4 x 8 piece of plywood (which I've seen him do, while I stood by in amazement), but he will not step over a string of polywire used to control the cattle.  Go figure.

  1. Ginger and Captain seem to be pretty laid back about their role there on the farm...I say you make an example out of one of them...and seeing how Ginger REALLY fell down on the job......
