Ketchup

I started this entry a week ago last Wednesday, but it seems so much happens so fast, it's difficult to keep up.  Right now, I'm on "baby watch" checking Little Sister, Too every 30 minutes or so because I think she is in the early stages of labor.

I had stayed home from work Wednesday to finish getting my tax stuff together (tax extension, yes!) and to clean house, and thank goodness I did. When I went out to take a break about 2:00, I found a lamb that had just been born, then started looking around for Alice (Fat Alice, the goat) who is oftentimes stuck in the fence somewhere.  Turns out she was a wee bit early having her babies and I found her in the barn with a little doeling and a buckling (goat talk for female and male).

I'm so fortunate - no, make that Sandy was so fortunate - that I was at home.  I found Sandy before Sandy found the new babies.  Now that would have been a deal breaker -- goat babies -- no tolerance!  So have been taking Sandy either to the office, when I don't have a meeting, or to doggie daycare . . . which is beginning to add up.

The end of the day Wednesday, I was standing in the kitchen getting ready for dinner when I saw another ewe all by herself out by the corral.  Went out to check and there was yet another new lamb, but this one was acting strange.  I figured it was blind because it was doing a Stevie Wonder thing with its head and neck.

When it got a little stronger she would just go around in circles and, if lucky enough to bump into its mother, it would nurse.  Pretty sad to watch, but it gave me the opportunity to pick it up and love on it.  I became quite attached to her but then, sadly, this Thursday when I came home from work, I couldn't find her anywhere.  I searched for her until dark, but she had just disappeared.

That night, I dreamed that I lost Kay on a mountain somewhere.  Note to Kay:  Don't ever go mountain climbing with me.

Well, Little Sister, Too has had her babies, another doeling and buckling.  Spent a couple of hours with her trying to get the little doeling to nurse.  Think she at least got a little, but she is looking weak.

Okay, where was I . . . the same day I lost little Stevie Wonder, I found Little Sister (as opposed to Little Sister, Too) with two little bucklings at the edge of the woods.  Couldn't leave her there overnight, so brought them into the yard where she has stayed until today when when she and the little ones ventured out.  Not sure where they are going to stay tonight.  It's been raining pretty hard on and off all day and goats do not like to get their feet wet.  They act like they are walking on slime or something gross.

Last Saturday Little Bit calved here in the yard.  I had let the cows in the yard because my lawnmower isn't working.  Thought I had taken some great video with my camera, but fortunately (for you, Sarah), I only got bits and pieces.  Too bad, it was really something to witness.

Okay, so I need to work on the video part.  Wasn't sure it had sound.
